Challenge #10

Five Things! The five things are totally up to you.

To make up for the recs I didn't have for the last post, I decided to go with five fics that I still think about even though it has sometimes been years since I last read them:

Last Outpost of All That Is by gekizetsu - Supernatural, Wincest, Not Rated (but I would say an M), I think this was the first SPN long fic I ever read, and I still think about it sometimes all these years later.  Sam and Dean wake up in a world where the apocalypse has happened and they are the only two humans left on Earth.  This isn't the apocalypse of the show, there are no angels or demons, human society just ends.  How the author describes this empty, humanless world is so haunting, but also strangely beautiful.  When the Wincest does happen it makes sense because they only have each other.

Lunacy by snae_b - Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley, E, Human AU, I don't normally read sci-fi horror so this story maybe hit me harder then it would most, but still think about this story a lot. Aziraphale and Crowley trapped on a Moon with a creature you can't really see, while they desperately try and find a way out.  The author does a great job ratcheting up the tension.  I often think about this concept and how other characters would deal with it.  Also, you can read this one canon-blind.

Equilibrium by PSW - Star Trek: TOS, McCoy & Spock & Kirk, T, This fic is just as good, if not better, than any of the tie-in novels I have read.  McCoy gets captured by non-federation aliens who wish to use him for his medical knowledge.  Meanwhile, Kirk, Spock, and the crew think McCoy has died in an accident.  I still think about poor McCoy trying to help others when he himself is a prisoner not being treated well.  Seriously if you are a McCoy fan at all you should really read this!

The Other Matter by Survivah - The Old Guard. Joe/Nicky, M, Joe and Nicky and the development of their relationship over the first 100 or so years.  I think of this as "the" definitive Joe/Nicky fic, it starts with Nicky and Joe meeting in Jerusalem for the first time once they have stopped trying to kill each other, and shows us glimpses of their lives over the next several years.  It has some very delicious pining and yearning, and a few misunderstandings throughout, but when they do eventually get together it feels so good!  I have read this more then once.

One Night by story_monger - Supernatural, Sam & Cas, T, Cas is asexual and Sam is a law student and sex worker that develop a friendship/relationship.  I realize this might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love this fic.  I've read it multiple times.  I love how Cas struggles with his asexuality and yet is very certain about who he is.  I think how Sam's sex work is handled is very done well, without shying away from some of the dangers of the profession.  Plus, there are cameos from a whole host of side characters from the series.  When ever this story ends I always feel sad, because I want to read more about their lives together.  This can also be read canon-blind!

Bonus:

Factory Settings by Anonymous, Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley, T, Crowley agrees to go back to Heaven with Aziraphale after season two, but gets reset to the angel he was before the Fall.  Okay, this is cheating a little bit, because it only came out last year, but my goodness this is an amazing fic!  You get to see what Crowley was like before he fell, and poor Aziraphale is so lost without his Crowley.  The author also does a great job incorporating the side characters, including Gabriel, Beelzebub, Muriel, etc.  If you had told me this was an alternative idea for season 3 I would have completely bought it!

If you follow me you've probably seen me rec these fics before, so please forgive me, but they stick in my head for a reason!  (Also, I realized after the fact that all of these are either slash or gen, but I swear I do read het and femslash as well!)
