As part of Fanlore’s Creature Feature Month we’ll be holding two editing chats on our discord.
Join us on Saturday May 17, 20:00 UTC (what time is that for me?) or Sunday May 18, 15:00 UTC (what time is that for me?). Come enjoy chatting with other editors and help expand Fanlore pages on creatures!
Everyone is welcome - you don’t need to have any experience with editing Fanlore to join in! We’ll be happy to help you.
Hope to see you there!

This popular UK fanzine was created in 1979 by high school students Guy Duke, artist, and Mike Stoner, writer. In the span of 12 years they created twenty five issues plus three glossaries, containing articles, reviews, and art, publishing weekly until they sold the zine in 1981.
Their goal was to capture everyone “from the rank amateur to top-class pro”, and are still remembered fondly by the fandom, decades later.

Today for our Creature Feature Month we’re looking at Selkies.
Selkies are creatures from Celtic mythology that can change from seal to human by shedding their skins. Although not as popular as some other mythical creatures, Selkies do find their way into fanworks. They often appear in AUs where a character is secretly a selkie, or fanworks from sci-fi/fantasy fandoms where the characters will encounter a selkie.
Do you know of any fanworks with selkies? Come add some examples to the Fanlore page!

Whether they’re canonically featured in fandoms as major or minor characters, antagonists, or as a recurring character, these creatures have had a place in media for a long time.
There’s a lot of fanart and fanfiction containing vampires, and some of the most common tropes are sire bonds—a well-known trope from vampire centric fandoms—biting, claiming, or for vampire characters to become human.
Other fandoms where vampires play a minor or no role fill their lack of canon-specific vampire lore by turning canon or original characters to vampires.
Tell us who your favorite vampire is in the comments and head on over to Fanlore to check out our vampire page!

A tale as old as time, today’s Creature Feature post is Beauty and the Beast, the classic Disney animated film.
Hugely popular upon its release, its fandom is continually sustained as new fans discover the film for the first time. Some fans trace their love of the enemies-to-lovers trope back to watching this film as a child. There is also some debate in the fandom on whether Belle preferred her prince as a beast or the human he later became.
Are you a fan of Beauty and the Beast? Come help expand its Fanlore page!
