Book Bingo Brainstorming

I'm a little late with this, but I've been little busy with end of year stuff. Anyways, we need a book bingo card for 2021, and we need to think up some squares. I will make the card up using the same website as last year. [personal profile] stonepicnicking_okapi, [personal profile] smallhobbit, and whoever else would like to participate this year, please leave your ideas in the comments.

I would really like a square for "sci-fi/fantasy", and maybe ones for "non-fiction" and "graphic novels" but I'm willing to compromise on those two.

List so far (we need 24, plus one free space):
*Sci-fi/Fantasy
*Non-Fiction
*Graphic Novel
*Crime/Mystery
*Colour in the title
*Number in the title
*Title begins with first letter of your name
*Historical (fiction/non-fiction)
*An author you've not read before
*Collection/Anthology
*Recommended
*Published in 2021
*POC Author
*Audiobook/ebook
*Movie/TV tie-in
*YA/Children's
*Classic/Published before 1985
*Award winning/Bestseller
*Female identifying Author
*Banned Book
*Biography/Autobiography
*Romance
*LGBTQ+ Author
*Disabled author
*Hobbies/Crafts
That should do it!

Things I'd like:
Crime/Mystery
Audiobook
Part of a series

I also like the general title based ones:
Colour in the title
Number in the title
Title begins with first letter of name (which could be either DW or actual name)

Definitely 'non-fiction'
Also, perhaps:
Historical (either fiction or non-fiction)
An author you've not read before

Sounds good - I don't have ebooks, so that makes us equal.

I don't mind sci-fi/fantasy. Non-fiction and graphic novel are okay with me, too.

There are genres (sci-fi, mystery, romance). There's also non-fiction or poetry. One could be 'collection/anthology' meaning a collection of short stories or poems. I don't mind media tie-in but I have no idea what I would do for that. But that's part of the challenge, no? Then there's X in the title/cover. Like Red (or blue or green) in the title or animal on the cover. Author who is new to you. POC Author.

I'm assuming we'll have two additional free choices, plus two substitute categories again. That way we can have everyone's favourite and if it's something you can't stand then you can substitute.

Maybe a square that says 'recommended' and that can be recommended to you by a person (online or in real life) or recommended to you by Amazon or Goodreads or whatever. Just an idea for something different.

That's a great idea! And collection/anthology too.

'Published this year' is another possibility but I'd rather not do 'number of pages' small or large.

That's a good idea - I'm sure there'll be a suitable audiobook for published in 2021.

I was fortunate in having been gifted a short book, otherwise I would have had problems.

I went back to last year's and looked and there was a 'Movie/TV tie-in' square. I had interpreted that as 'book which has been made into a film' in which case there are plenty! So, you know, that's okay. I was trying to think of it going the other way (a book written about a TV series after the fact, like your Supernatural and Star Trek ones, and I was drawing a blank, but the other way around is no problem at all!

FYI, some other squares from last year. I have no strong feelings for or against:

Romance
Award Winning Book
Food/Cooking (or maybe something more general like Hobbies or Arts & Crafts)
Children/YA
Book Mentioned in Another Book

Another one I thought of was Work in Translation. But like I said, I have no feelings one way or the other. Just brainstorming to hit your 24 total.

Yeah, I think Movie/TV tie-in works. Cool.

Just my opinon but the term 'Classic' is subjective and I would vote against using it. But, just one opinion, your call.

Yes, I would prefer 'published before XXXX' It's much more objective. I don't really have an opinion about the date itself.

I'd be interested in joining 2021 book bingo, whatever ends up in the card.

[personal profile] gwenhwyfar1984 2020-12-28 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be interested to join in

Young Adult book
Science book
Classic

And can we expand audiobook/ebook to include podcasts like LeVar Burton Reads, or a literary vlogger reading a book?

Yeah, I guess that would be a problem...

I do want to keep YA and Classic though!
And I'm firm about Classic and not published before xxxx. That makes me think far too much like my English classes at University (I have a degree in English) and would make me not use it. Classic offers many more opportunities to people, and I think we should have some that are more subjective and open to interpretation for people?

Also, NYT (or your country's equivilant!) bestseller?

Ooh, I love that compromise!!

Oh, I know all about that! I read the book because of that controversy and researched it.
That happened for the book Handbook for Mortals. The author called bookstores connected with the list and bought all the copies. The New York Times did not know this, and when they found out, they pulled her book.
So in actuality, it was a one-time event that they quickly corrected, and the book that deserved that don't one.

But if you are uncomfortable with it, then yeah, award-winning is a good compromise!

And speaking of, how about a banned book? Do other countries do that? Like, here in the US schools ban books for stupid reasons. There is a banned book week, and libraries give out lists of famously banned books.
I don't mean legally banned, of course! But like, banned in schools. Or maybe a banned book/controversial book?

[personal profile] gwenhwyfar1984 2020-12-28 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Female identifying author?

[personal profile] gwenhwyfar1984 2020-12-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Book by a disabled author?
Book by an LGBTQ+ author?

[personal profile] gwenhwyfar1984 2020-12-29 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I may be able to help with that?
I know someone who is deep in the disabled writers community on Twitter. I know through him they really want to get their work out there and are often overlooked. If you want to do this category, I can ask him to recommend some disabled authors, or how to find disabled authors, and you can possibly share it?

If we do award-winning it makes it easier to borrow from the library, because it doesn't need to be a this year's award. There can be a very long wait for anything which is very popular.

How about biography/autobiography?
